The Barter System

During a recent morning drive I noticed our vans temperature gauge rising at an alarming rate so I drove straight to my regular mechanic. Unfortunately he decided to close December 20-28 and I had to take it somewhere else. At this point Moeisha is overheating but still makes it the ten blocks to the next shop. I wait around on a leather couch while they take a look at her. A few hours later I’m told the old beast needs a new waterpump, a $700 bill. Spending $700 on a van that cost us $700 to buy, not too sure the rest of the guys would be into that (especially since we just dropped $500 in the past two months on repairs). I quickly decide there’s no way can we spend that kind of money at this time of the year, though we do need to have a van to get around. I offer to paint the mechanic’s office and pay $200. After some deliberation he agrees, we pick colours and the next day Todd and I paint the mechanic’s office while Mo’ gets her repairs. To top it off, the mechanic ended up installing a new thermostat and a couple hoses free of charge. Basically, a Christmas Miracle…with a strong faith in the barter system. Moeisha is running great, which is a godsend because we need to get to Calgary next month. If you’re in Edmonton and need a mechanic, get in touch and we can direct you!
